Sensory Integration Dysfunction
What is it?
Sensory integration is the ability to make sense of and organize all the vast amounts of information that enter the brain at the same time. As you sit here right now, you have information entering your body through your clothes, your ears and eyes, and your muscles and joints from your posture in your chair. Dysfunction in any of your child's sensory systems can cause them to become agitated, fidgety, distracted, lose their balance, avoid moving, or to the contrary, move too much.
What can be done?
Core trunk weakness and gravitational insecurity are two target areas that physical therapists can work on with your child. Strengthening and movement activities, games, and exercises can be developed to challenge your child's areas of difficulty and help them improve and succeed.
