For children ages 5 and older, these problems may demonstrate trunk weakness. There is something we can do to help him or her improve!

Core Challenge is our program for improving trunk weakness. Our six week intensive course provides individualized evaluation and an individualized exercise program. The exercises vary each week, with a highlighted “Challenge of the Week” for specific practice and review in the subsequent section. This is combined with a weekly home exercise program.

Core Challenge goals:
• Improve trunk strength
• Improve balance
• Improve coordination, specifically with ball and jumping skills
• Improve fine motor skills through shoulder girdle stabilization

Your child’s improved foundation for movement should carry over into
fine motor skills such as handwriting and into higher level gross motor skills such as ball sports, bike riding and rollerblading.

Strength, coordination and balance are essential building blocks for success. We can help our children improve their development in these areas by offering them many opportunities to practice their skills. Go outside and play each and every day! I highly recommend the All Kids Playground at Hess-Hathaway Park in Waterford. The playground provides a good amount of equipment on which to practice motor skills. A visit to the park can be fun for adults and children!
